DON'T DO IT OR YOU'LL REGRET IT!
Review Date: 8/26/2010 Reviewer: Anonymous
Moving to Breezy Point was probably the worst mistake I could make moving to Norfolk VA. As a young Sailor, it does have some advantages, that is, if you are single and this is your first apartment. It is within walking distance of NOB, the Exchange, the Commissary, and quite a few local restaurants and shops. About half of the residents here are also military so you won’t be disturbing to many people when you have to leave for work at 5 AM. Parking is adequate for residents and there is guest parking (very limited though it may be) available. The outside is relatively nice and the office is as well. That is about where the good ends. Notice how I didn’t say office staff? The staff is really friendly until about a week after you move in. Soon when you depart on the adventure that is Breezy Point you will find that the office staff is very rude and slow to respond if they do at all. The week my wife and I moved in, the dryer ate $250 of our clothes and my uniforms. We did the research and found all the receipts for said clothes and asked what they were going to do about the dryer, and the destroyed clothing. Two weeks and three complaints later they decided to work on it and found a fish hook, without even bothering to offer to replace some of the uniforms or clothing. We also complained about power outlets not holding plugs and tripping breakers for no reason, and occasionally sparking. The thermostat is also off by about five degrees. The key also gets stuck in our door on a regular basis. All of these we have complained about numerous times and were told “that’s just how things are around here.” Our SUV was broken into and the towing company wants to take your cars. Master’s Towing is supposed to get out of their trucks before they come into the complex and look for the decals. What they do is drive around the complex and if they don’t see a sticker because, say, you back into your space, then they try to take your car. And if they do take it, you might want to make sure your vehicle is in good shape afterwards because they don’t check to make sure the truck is hooked up right, after they put your car on the back. The first week I had a sticker on my car the driver tried to rip out my drive train by having one fork on the back end of the frame and the other hanging off the rear wheel well on my front wheel drive car that happened to have the parking brake engaged. Needless to say it wouldn’t have been pretty. I complained about bugs and they took three weeks to have a maintenance person come spray when they told us a professional comes around quarterly and is available at need. During the Nor’easter, the first floor apartments flooded and all they did was take a fan to dry the carpets. During the storm last winter we had mold growing in the window seals. The man who came to look at it said it was dirt even when we held up a picture of mold. Three months and several more complaints later they replaced one window and resealed the others which made some difference but not much. Our neighbors are often very loud and the office staff doesn’t do anything to take care of it. The local children (most don’t even live in the complex) come and play. This isn’t a nuisance by itself until they throw footballs at your car and damage it right in front of maintenance people who don’t care. The gates are often broken and the office will yell at you for your music if you have the windows open. The maintenance people also enter your apartment when you haven’t given them permission. If you complain about this, and ask one of them what would happen if someone entered their home without permission, they will tell you they “would have attacked the enterer with a weapon if available”. I found out that this is a trap the hard way. Do not respond to this comment because if you do they will try to have you charged with threatening a staff member, the maintenance manager will tell you he will have you kicked out, and the police will be called for no reason. If your A/C breaks in the summer, you will have to threaten to break your lease and call the health department to get them to fix it, even though it is considered a “maintenance emergency” in your lease. The inside of the apartments look like trash and there isn’t even a dish washer. We made that mistake and didn’t notice that one wasn’t there, even though at the time it was advertised on several apartment websites (including their own) that the complex has one. The appliances are almost as old as I am (twenty-one years old), and no I’m not joking. My father made the comment that his apartments when I was born had the same model. All in all this was defiantly a learning experience. They are way too over priced even for Norfolk. The staff is rude, maintenance doesn’t fix the problems, and they do a bait and switch with your apartment. The worst part is that if the staff wasn’t so rude, and the maintenance people took some pride in their work, this might actually be a nice place to live. What a year of an adventure it has been. Ending on the up side, they do at least offer the military RPP program and student discounts. |
